Many of us have read the term "halal," but not many of us know what it means. Halal can be seen on food marks and restaurants. The term is important for our Muslim friends as it shows what is permitted for them to eat by their Islamic dietary law. In a country with citizens of different religions, the term halal is very important.
For Muslim-populated countries, seeing halal on food products and eateries is no trouble at all since they are run by Muslims who adhere to Islamic rules. But for states that have citizens exercising various faiths, then halal is not that easy to come by. Luckily, more and more establishments are becoming conscious of their customers' orientations.
The word halal simply means legal, which implies that if an eatery says they are halal-certified or a food item has this term on its tag, the preparation of their items is in accordance with the Islamic law. Muslims, therefore, are allowed to use or consume the product.
Just what are permitted in Islamic law? For meat items, the manner in which an animal should be killed must be swift. When slaughtering an animal, its windpipe and gullet must be cut and done quickly.
And because there are halal or permitted items, there are also haraam or forbidden products. To start with, Muslims are not allowed to consume pork and take intoxicants. So a product or an eatery must not use those ingredients to their menu. There should also be no contamination of the items, meaning, if a utensil has been used to prepare a pork meal, it should not be utilized any longer to prepare a halal-approved item.
Other prohibited items include blood, carnivores or birds of prey, animals slaughtered in the name of any other god but Allah or have been consecrated to another god, and corpse of an animal.
There are Muslim groups who declare food products as halal and give halal authentication to establishments. Products that have halal certification are the ingredients used by halal establishments to make sure that they follow the Islamic dietary law strictly.
Today, more and more eateries not run by Muslims still make great effort to abide Islamic dietary laws. Those food establishments show that they honor and respect all their customers, regardless of their religious preferences.
